Susan M. Lampinen PSC, CSPWC
Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Susan Lampinen
began exploring art at an early age. The rugged northern landscape
fueled a need in Sue to represent its beauty through her art.
Her interest in nature led to a degree in environmental science
while she continued to express herself through painting and drawing.
In 1990, after working in the environmental
field for several years, Sue's part-time interest in art became
a full-time profession. She opened Lampinen Fine Art and Custom
Framing, her own gallery and studio in Sudbury in 1995. Since
then, Sue has won the distinction of being selected as one of
the Master Pastel Painters of the World showcased in International
Artist magazine and she has had a feature article in The Pastel
Journal. She has also had artwork chosen to be part of the Ducks
Unlimited Canada National Art Portfolio, and the prestigious
Birds in Art Exhibition. Sue is an elected member of both the
Pastel Society of Canada and the Canadian Society of Painters
in Watercolour and one of her watercolour paintings is part of
the Watercolour Society's Diploma Collection in Brampton, Ontario.
This award-winning artist and instructor exhibits
annually in Northern Ontario juried shows that include the La
Cloche Art Show and the Sudbury Studio Tour. Sue has held many
successful solo exhibitions as well as biennial exhibitions with
Nature in Art: 3 Visions, an art group formed along with other
prominent local artists Debra-Lynn Ireland and Cheryl Battistelli.
Sue exhibits annually at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival near
Peterborough.
When not working at her studio and gallery,
Sue spends her time sketching and finding inspiration in Northern
Ontario's Wilderness. She creates evocative landscapes in graphite,
pastel and transparent watercolour, while exploring the nuances
of these versatile media. She is especially inspired to capture
those fleeting moments of the serene beauty of winter and its
accompanying wildlife.
Over the years, Sue has studied with such notable
artists as Dwayne Harty, Zoltan Szabo, Brian Atyeo and Jack Reid.
An artistic occupation consists of a lifelong learning process
and it is this evolution that continues to keep her journey compelling.
"In painting what inspires me, I hope to evoke a kindred
emotion in others."
